From 07/10/1903 to 28/12/1904 William Henry was a member of the Brighton District Lodge of the "Star of Hope" I.O.O.F. ..... which suggests that this may have been the period when he was working at Basingstoke...... Was it during this time that he bought an Italian made mandolin (that has, in June 2017, been passed down to a Gt Gt Grandaughter) at a music shop, Messrs Harrison & Compy, 14 Queen's Road, Brighton....?... see accompanying image.... However..... by 18/05/1909 he was living at 76 Charlotte St, Fraserburgh, Scotland, and was a member of the Independant Order of Rechabites, and on 28/09/1909, at the age of 27yrs 2mnths, he became a Machinist Member of the Amalgamated Society of Machinists in Fraserburgh. He may have moved to Basingstoke AFTER his sojourn in Scotland, as he appears to have met Elizabeth Wells there, and was married to her in 1911 near Birmingham.
One of the early employees of the fledgling Austin Motor Company at Longbridge, Kings Norton, Birmingham. He became a toolmaker.... and was still a member of the Amalgamated Society of Machinists in Jan 1916.
When demand for vehicles dropped sharply after the First World War, he returned to his hometown of Chippenham in Wiltshire, to work at Saxby & Co(Engineers)....later to become Westinghouse Brake & Signal Company. By 13/08/1926 he was living at 101 Sheldon Road, Chippenham, Wilts. and had received Convalescent Home care at Clevedon, Somerset. In 1939 register he is listed at 5 Sheldon Road, Chippenham, an Engineering Grinder. By 1943 he was living at 5 Sheldon Road, Chippenham, Wiltshire., and was a regular member of the Amalgamated Engineering Union from Jan 1947 through to retirement in Dec 1954. ....... Also still member of the Independant Order of Rechabites until the end of 1954.
