Biography

Julia (Irrgang) Cadwallader has German Roots.

Julia, daughter of John Irrgang (1841-1921) and Emma Virginia Metcalfe (1856-1943),[1] was born 3 February 1881) in Wellsville, Warrington Township, York County, Pennsylvania.[2][3][1] Growing up in a large family, Julia (age 19) had to pull her own weight by becoming a servant.[1] She continued living at home in Wellsville in 1900 with her parents John (age 59, yeoman) and Emma J. Irrgang (44, mother of nine, all living), and siblings William F. (24, machinist), Blanche E. (21, servant), Edward L. (18), Annie E. (14), Adolph H. (10), Adaline W. (6), Dorthy E. (5) and Stewerd E. (3).[1]

Although many of her siblings had left the nest prior to 1910, Julia (age 28, fly net maker) remained in Wellsville with her parents John (68, whip factory worker) and Emma Irrgang (52, dressmaker and mother of 10, nine living), and siblings Adeline W. (16, fly net maker), Dorothy E. (14) and Stewart E. (13).[4]

On 13 August 1913 in York, York County,[5] she married a farmer, Jesse Krall Cadwallader, the son of John W. Cadwallader and Frances "Fannie" Krall. Her widowed father-in-law lived with the couple in Warrington Township until his death in 1924.[6][7]

In 1920 the three were aged 38 (Jesse and Julia) and John W. was 74.[6] Jesse K. (age 48) and Julia A. Cadwallader (48) had no children, so they were alone in Warrington in 1930.[7]

Both Jesse, who died in 1933,[8] and Julia, who died in March 1969,[2][3] are buried in Warrington Friends Meeting House Cemetery in Wellsville.[3]

Research Notes

  • Year of Birth: Julia's birth is shown in Feb. 1881 on the 1900 census[1] and Feb 1880 on the Find-a-Grave[3] and Social Security Death Index records.[2] It is more likely that she was born in 1881 because she is missing on the 1880 census, which was enumerated on 12 June 1880.[9] If she were born in February 1880, she should have been included with the family on that record.
