Biography

He was born sometime around 1800, in Ireland. He had a sister, Ann Irvin. [1] [2] [3] [4]

He may be the Gered Irvin who was naturalized in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on 1 October 1842. (This Gered Irvin declared his intention to become a citizen on 12 August 1839, having lived in the United States at least five years.) [5]

According to a family story, he married Harriet Kramer. [6]

He married Elizabeth [unknown family name]. [1]

Gerard had at least one child: [1]

William John Irvin

In 1850, he was living in the Cedar Ward, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, with his presumed wife Eliza, with his son William, and with Ann (whose relation is unknown). He was a stone cutter. (Cedar Ward extended from Fourth Street to the western boundary of Philadelphia city, and from Spruce to South.) [1]

In 1853, he was a laborer, living on Helmuth Street. (Helmuth Street was in Cedar Ward; it ran west from 412 South 10th Street to 413 South 17th Street, according to the 1860 Gopsill's Philadelphia directory, page 1151.) [7]

He lived at 1636 Helmuth Street from 1856 to 1858, and then moved to 1634 Pine Street, where he lived for the rest of his life. He was a marble polisher in 1856-1857, a stonecutter in 1858, a marble polisher in 1859-1860, and a laborer in 1861 [8]

In the 1860 census, they were living in ward 7 of Philadelphia. Gerard was a marble polisher, and William was an apprentice stonecutter. Gerard owned $1,500 in real estate, and $300 in personal property. [9]

He died on 27 June 1870, of bronchitis. He lived at 1634 Pine Street, and was a marble mason. He was buried on 30 June 1870, in the Odd Fellows Cemetery, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [2] [3] [4]

Research Notes

According to the cemetery records, he was buried on 30 June 1869. But no death certificates or death notices have been found for a Jerret Irvin who died in June 1869, and the Jerret Irvin who was buried on 30 June 1870[4] or 29 June[3] was buried in Odd Fellows Cemetery, was a marble mason, and was lived at 1634 Pine Street, all of which match the husband of Elizabeth Irvin. The cemetery records, then, are very probably wrong. [2]

Whether the Gerard Irvin who was naturalized in 1842 is this Gerard is not clear. Note especially that another Gerard Irvin lived in Philadelphia then. See for example his entry in the 1860 census (where he was a tavern keeper): Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, 4th ward, western division, page 973 = 167 handwritten, family 1248, FamilySearch
