He joined the British Army in January 1850. Fought in the New Zealand Maori Wars - 40th foot regiment. He landed in Sydney, 11 November 1852, came to Adelaide in 1854, then Melbourne in 1855. In 1858 he went to New Zealand and fought in the Maori War in 1862. He returned to Adelaide in 1864 and joined the Police Force, he is mentioned in 1880 for making requests to repave the police station yard, clean and paint the reserve room, reporting on materials for summer uniforms and reporting a fellow officer for unsuitability[1] He was a Sergeant of Police in Adelaide at the time of his wife's death (1889).[2] He retired from the police force in 1899.[3]
He had the New Zealand medal awarded to members of the 40th foot regiment. Soldier number 2943.[4]
He was also publican between 1901 and 1903 at the Queens Head Hotel, North Adelaide.

He was known to be Roman Catholic. Catholic Church records from Aughalurcher start at 1835 (three years after his birth).
