From Jim IRVINE via Lorna (Apr 2014): Ellen Irvine was the aunt of my grandfather James Irvine. ============================================================
She was a daughter of James Kirk Irvine and Catherine Armour Ellen (Nelly) Irvine (b. Helen) was born on 14th March 1877 (1877: 597 Kilmarnock 299) at 87, King Street, Kilmarnock. Her father James was a hearthrug weaver. In 1881 she was at home, aged 4; in 1891 she was 14, a wool mill worker. On 31st December 1896, at Main Street Kilmaurs (1896: 598 Kilmaurs 4), she married John Fairbairn , aged 21, of Kirkton, Kilmaurs, He was a brickworks labourer aged 21, born on 23rd July 1875 at Floors Cottage, Dreghorn, a son of Walter Fairbairn, also a brickworks labourer, and Catherine Nixon. Ellen was a housekeeper, aged 19, of Townhead, Kilmaurs. Her father James Kirk Irvine was a carpet weaver at this time. The witnesses were Barbara Walker and John Irvine. In 1901 Ellen and John were living at Main Street, Kilmaurs (1901: 598 Kilmaurs 1:13). John was 24 and a coal miner and Ellen was 25. I have seen no record of any children of the marriage. It looks as if Ellen and John split quite early and I believe I have found Ellen in the 1911 census for Dreghorn. A Henry Morrison, aged 35 and a coal miner (hewer), originally from Dalry, was living at 21, Corsehill Square in the town (1911: 589 Dreghorn 2:30). He was a widower with the three children of his first wife Agnes ; Mary 12 and Agnes 10, both from Dalry, and James 4 and from Irvine. Also staying with him was a servant Nellie Irvine from Kilmarnock. She was 35 and recorded as single! It looks as if Nellie was concealing her first marriage. I have not found any sure sign of John 1911. On 16th May 1914 John and Ellen were divorced (CS46/1914/7/19). Ellen was recorded as Ervine rather than Irvine.
On 19th September 1914 Ellen married again, this time to a Henderson Morrison, at the Church of Scotland, Pleanholm, Plean (1914: 488/1 St Ninians 65). Henderson was 41, a widower and miner, born on 10th April 1872 at Braehead, Dalry, to William Morrison, a miner, and Margaret Campbell (deceased). Ellen was given as 37, a SPINSTER and domestic servant, with no reference to her previous marriage. Her father was given as James Irvine, engineer’s labourer, but her mother was wrongly given as Catherine McMurtrie . Both gave their address as 59, Red Row, Plean. The witnesses were John Irvine and Catherine Isa Morrison. Henderson died, aged 60, on 22nd May 1932 (1932: 488/1 St Ninians 68). He was a coal miner married to Ellen Irvine who notified his death.
Helen herself died, aged 74, on the 23rd September 1951 at Main Street, Stirling (1951: 490 Stirling 439) although this was not her usual address. She was the daughter of hearthrug maker James Irvine and Catherine Armour, and the widow of coal miner Henderson Morrison. Her death was notified by the occupier of the house, W Logan. Her first husband John Fairbairn is not mentioned.
