Alexander Irving is the son of John Irving and Agnes Clark Hay was born 14 May 1813 in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.
Alexander Irving was one of the first intake of pupils at the Edinburgh Academy (1824-28).[1]
Alexander Irving went out to India and joined the Bengal Staff Corps as a second lieutenant in 1844, being promoted to lieutenant in the following year. In this capacity, he served throughout the Sutlej campaign of 1845-6. He was engaged in the actions of Moodkee, Ferozeshah, Buddiwal, and Aliwal, for which he was awarded the medal and two clasps.
In 1841, Alexander Irving married Mary Elizabeth Sarle, daughter of Charles Sarle of Cornwall. They had at least two children.
Alexander was promoted to captain in 1857, major in 1864, lieutenant-colonel in 1870, colonel in 1857 and major general in 1877.
Alexander Irving died in about 1882.
