Erected by a few friends as a token of esteem to the memory of George IRVING gardener Annan who was drowned while bathing in the Solway Aug 18th 1871 aged 18 years and is here interred. Life how short, eternity how long. Also Betsy IRVING who died at Annan 18th June 1880 aged 25 years.

Newspaper report--
August 24th 1871 Southern Reporter On Friday afternoon, George Irving, aged eighteen years, son of Richard Irving, seedsman and nurseryman, Annan, went to bathe in the Solway near Seafield, being accompanied by two boys. Irving, who could not swim, got beyond his depth. The boys could render him no aid, and before assistance arrived he sank and was drowned. The body was found when the tide ebbed near to the spot where the casualty occurred. ^[2]
