Buried at Dalton Churchyard Cemetery, Dalton, Dumfriesshire.

Memorial Inscription: John Irving who died at Hindgill 23rd December 1845 aged 63 years. Also Francis and James his sons who died in infancy. Also William his son who died 30th November 1847 aged 7 years. Also Isabella Carlyle spouse to John Irving who died 26th October 1855 aged 54 years.[4]


Research Notes

Possible parents: Using the Scottish naming convention John’s father was likely to be either John or Thomas (name of first two sons) His wife’s mother was Mary, the name chosen for the first daughter. Isabella may have been John’s mother’s name. However it is also his wife’s name.

John Irving is a relative of mine. The family story is that Wellington didn't have enough artillerymen or gunners so some royal navy gunners were attached to Wellungtons artillery. We have no paperwork to prove this.

John Irving served on the ship "L'Aigle". He lost a leg at the Battle of Waterloo and survived.
