Basil Irwin, 68, Sandstone, and a veteran conservation officer in the area, passed away at Miller Hospital at St. Paul Friday, February 13, after a lengthy illness.

Basil Irwin was born in Iowa on February 14, 1902, the son of frank and Mae Irwin. He graduated from Cedar Rapids high school at Cedar Rapids, where he gained national recognition as a track athlete. He won the National Championship for the ½ mile and 1 mile event. He was a member of the World Champion Track Team in the 1924 Olympics, which were held in Paris, France. He won other numerous medals for Excellency in track events throughout the Midwest.

He moved with his parents to Mora, MN in 1925 where he was associated in business with his father. In 1928 he joined the Minnesota Conservation Department as a Warden and worked until 1937 when he left the Department in 1945 he rejoined the Conservation Department and was stationed at Sandstone continuously until his death. He successfully coached the Dell Grove Junior rifle Team to state Championship titles in 1950, 1951, 1952 and 1954 and to Sectional Titles in other years. He was the state's firs Warden-Pilot, along with his many other accomplishments as a game warden. He was a member of the Sandstone Masonic Lodge No. 234 and belonged to various outdoor organizations pertaining to his work.

He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Margie Magers of Beilflower, California; one brother, Ray, of Minneapolis, four grandchildren and other relatives.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Feb. 17 at 2 p.m. at the United Church of Christ (Cong) at sandstone with Rev. Earl Snader officiating. Fred Peterson was the soloist, accompanied by Mrs. Arthur H. Larson. Casket bearers were: Burton Ellig, Cyril Jacobson, Daniel Volkmann, Gust Clemenson, Arnold Niedorf and Melvin Larson, all brother conservation officers with the Minnesota Department of Conservation. Burial was in Spring Park Cemetery at Sandstone. Larson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
