John was born about 1847. He was the son of Thomas Irwin and Sarah McPherson.
John Irwin married Mary Jane Benson April 29, 1879, at Altedesert Parish Church, Pomeroy Civil Parish, County Tyrone, Ireland. They were the parents of eight children:

They migrated to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States about 1887 and settled in the Hazelwood neighborhood. In 1900 they rented at 35 Bigelow Street and John was a “coke drawer” in the manufacture of coke from coal.[1] They purchased a home at 102 Bigelow Street and John was a special policeman at the coke ovens.[2] In 1920 at about age 75 John was a watchman in the steel industry.[3] John was a member of the Loyal Orange Institution, active along with son Alex in the Sons of William Lodge No. 624, Universal L.L.O.A.[4]
John died Thursday, February 18, 1926, at 3:25 p.m. Funeral services were Saturday, February 20, 1926, at the home of his son Alex at 4231 Gladstone Street, Greenfield.[5][6] He was buried in Homewood Cemetery, Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, USA.[7]
