John enlisted 9/17/1862 in the Southern Border Brigade and mustered in 10/18/1862.

The Fremont County Herald, 11/8/1898. "An Old Pioneer Gone" John Irvin was born 8/15/1815, in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania and died in Sidney, Iowa, 11/6/1898, at the age of 83 years 2 months and 23 days. In 1838 he was married to Maria Humphrey, who died in 1891. To them six children were born, three of whom are now living.
He was converted when about sixteen years old and united with the Methodist Church in Meigs County, Ohio. On changing his residence he united with the United Brethren Church. In 1894 he took up his residence at Sidney, at which time he again united with the Methodist Church where he remained a faithful member until his death.
The deceased had been a resident of Fremont County for a number of years. This quiet consistent life won for him a large circle of friends who feel that his example is well worthy of imitation.
The funeral service was held in the M. E. Church at Sidney on Monday, Nov. 1, conducted by the pastor. The funeral discourse was based upon First Cor. 15:57 "Thanks be to God who giveth as the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ", the general topic being The Responsibility of Life as Related to the Victory over Sin and Death.
