Martha Isbell (-1799) married James Gilliam in Lunenburg County 1 Dec. (bond) 1761, Henry Isbell surety. James Gilliam was an ensign from Lunenburg County during the French and Indian War for which he was compensated £2.14, 89 and was head of a household of 12 whites and 13 blacks in Charlotte County in 1782. James left a will in Charlotte County remembering wife, Martha, and naming sons John, William, Thomas, Robert, Allen, and Harrison Gilliam, and daughters Amy Gilliam, Elizabeth May, and Sally Thweatt (will dated 13 Oct. 1792 and proved 2 June 1794). John Gilliam was appointed guardian to William, Harrison, and Thomas Gilliam 1 Dec. 1794. Harrison chose Robert Gilliam, Thomas chose Allen Gilliam, and William Gilliam chose Stephen May as their guardians 5 Jan. 1795. The inventory and appraisement of the estate of Martha Gilliam, deceased, was recorded 2 Dec. 1799. John, William, Robert, Harrison, and Thomas were taxpayers in Charlotte County in 1800. [1]
