Biography

Martin was born reportedly in 1730.

Martin reportedly married Anna Maria Minnig.[1] He also reportedly married Anna Maria Schwery, from Greich. It seems that he probably married twice, as he seemingly had children from no later than 1754 and into the 1780s, and this is an extremely long period for a single mother to bear children. (It is also possible that these were two different Martin Ittigs, although both very prominent and with political and/or military titles).

Children include:

  • Joseph bap. 17 December 1754
  • Anna Maria Ittig b. ca. 1770
  • Thereisa Ittig b. ca. 1783

In his history of the region, Father Peter Arnold gave brief synopses of local families, including the Ittigs, and wrote:

Johann Martin Ittig von Ried war in den Jahren 1772, 1782, und 1784 Meier in Mörel. Sein Sohn Josef war Wirt in Mörel und 1785 als Hauptmann in Spanien. Der Sohn Alexander zog als Soldat nach Neapel und später nach Frankreich, Felix Ittig, geboren 1795, von Bitsch, wurde Großkastlan des Zendens.
Translation, possibly erroneous: Johann Martin Ittig von Ried was mayor in Mörel in 1772, 1782 and 1784. His son Josef was a landlord in Mörel and in 1785 as a captain in Spain. The son Alexander moved as a soldier to Naples and later to France, Felix Ittig, born in 1795, from Bitsch, became Grand Castleman of Zendens.

He was was a Landrat sitting in Sion who in 1791 signed, with seven others, a declaration stating that Upper Wallis would renounce it sovereign rights over the Lower Valais.[2] According to Riedmatten, he held the military title of "Major." According to father Peter Arnold, he was "Meier" (mayor) of Mörel for several years. While both of these may be true, one wonders if someone misread Major for Meier, or vice-versa.

It is not clear if Felix described here is a son or not — because he was from Bitsch. But Martin did have a son Felix.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Martin by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Martin:
