Alice Esther Ives was born on 15 January 1853 in Tiskilwa, Illinois. Her parents were Dr. Franklin Benedict Ives and his first wife, Frances M. Luce.
U.S. Census records in 1860[1] and 1870[2] show Alice Ives living in Tiskilwa with her parents and three siblings: Franklin (b. 1851), Nelly (b. 1855), and Mary (b. 1865).
Alice moved to Lynn, Massachusetts at the age of 19 in order to teach at a private school and study voice at the Boston Conservatory of Music.[3] The following year, she married shoe manufacturer and merchant Francis William Breed.[4] Their known children are:
Census records between 1880 and 1910 show Alice and Francis Breed living at their estate, "Deer Cove", just outside of Lynn, Massachusetts.[12][13][14] From 1920 onward, Alice Breed is enumerated living in New York City.[15][16]
Alice Ives Breed was notable in her time as a philanthropist and social leader.[4] Her club affiliations include the Women's Auxiliary of the YMCA (president), Lynn Women's Club (vice-president), General Federation of Women's Clubs (vice-president), Massachusetts State Committee of Correspondence (chair), Massachusetts Society of the Sons and Daughters of Illinois, and Daughters of the American Revolution.[17] She spent time in all the US states and Alaska, and all over the globe.[18][19] According to one journalist: "Mrs Breed has been to the theatre in Venice in a gondola, to
church in Hong Kong in a sedan chair and to address a club in
Yokohama in a jinrickshaw …"[20]
She was also an early member of the Baha'i Faith community in America.[21] In 1912, she hosted ‘Abdu’l-Bahá in her home several times and became very close to Him and His Family.[22]
Alice Ives Breed died at her home in New York City on 16 October 1933, at the age of 80.[23][24] She is buried in the Breed family plot in Pine Grove Cemetery, Lynn, Massachusetts.[25]
