Charles Ives was an American classical music composer, musician, and life insurance company founder and president. He is considered one of the most original and innovative composers of 20th century American music. Charles Ives was also a very successful and prosperous business leader. Much of his musical output was unappreciated by his music teachers and peers, and neglected until near the end of his life. Over time his music has become internationally popular for its early modernist style incorporating traditional American patriotic themes and hymns with complicated poly-tonal musical structure. Charles learned much about developing his innovative approach to musical composition as a youth from his father George Ives, a respected musician and former American Civil War bandmaster. Leonard Bernstein and Leopold Stokowsky were early performers and promoters of the unique music of Charles Ives. BURIAL Wooster Cemetery Danbury, Fairfield County, Connecticut, USA
