Benjamin was born in 1827 in Georgia to Thomas Ivey and Sancil Burkhalter. He had at least 15 siblings: Sarah, Harriett Martha, Jesse, Martha F, Thomas J, Mary Ann Rebecca, Adam, Francis Marion, Sancil Elvira, George W F, Avariller Concord Amanda, Lucinda Arena M, Henrietta Susan, Robert, and Hardy Pierce.
