Biography

Charlotte was born about 1752, possibly in Georgia. She may have passed away about 1839 around the age of 87. It is not known where she is buried.

She married about 1768 to John A Painter, possibly the son of Richard Painter and Amy Duncan. She may have been about 16 years old. They had at least 4 children together:

  1. Elizabeth Painter
  2. Richard Ivy Painter
  3. Nancy Painter
  4. Amy Painter
  • Fact: Estate of John Painter (2 May 1836) Commissioners appointed to divide the estate between the widow and heirs of John: Thos. Harris, John H. Martin, Samuel Loftin, Richard J. Painter, and Josiah, Jesse, James and Wesley Cranford (children of Elizabeth Cranford, dec'd).

6 April 1835. Charlotte Painter, widow of John Painter, cited to appear in Court and show cause why letters of Adm. Should not be granted on said estate. p. 169,

4th May 1835. Samuel Loftin (son-in-law) filed an inventory and appraisement of this estate. commissioners appointed by the court to divide the estate of John Painter, deceased. p. 173, .

6th July 1835. Report of these Commissioners. p. 203,

2 May 1836. Above report set aside as informal & illegal. Five new Commissioners appointed to divide John Painter's estate between the widow and the followint heirs: Thos. Harris, John H. Martin, Samuel Loftin, Richard J . Painter, and the Children of Elizaeth Cranford . Deceased. p. 226.

Jan, 1837, Final settlement by Sam'l Loftin, of the estate of John Painter.

Note: Book C. Minutes of Orphans Court, Contains several reports by Samuel Loftin as guardian of Wesley and James Cranford, up through the year 1844. [This information provided by gcranford2791031 on the familysearch.org site]

There is a marriage record for a Charlotte Painter and a John Gillaspy, dated 26 Mar 1835 in Botetourt, Virginia. Some family researchers have this source attached to Charlotte, but it is not known if this is accurate.
