My grandmother (Emma Williams Ivey) was the best genealogist in the family and she discussed it before her death. She stated that Leonard Ivey was my grandfather's grandfather and that Leonard Ivey's father was Jesse Ivey.
Not entirely sure Charity's husband was Jesse, but some others deduce that it is so because so many of the names of the children of both coinciding. Furthermore, we note that Jesse's name appears on the marriage license for Basheba Ivey and William B. Bullard.
Jesse is found still in his father's household in 1790, as is one CharityIvey.
Other researchers have suggested that Charity's husband may also have been Silas or Thomas Ivey. They were both in the area as of 1779. Thomas Ivey had a land grand on Shelly's Bay in 1779 which is the location of the Ivey family farm.
Here is a bit of interesting information from censuses reported by Terry Rumore (trumore@pacbell.net):
Isham Ivey and wife Sarah Cox (b: Abt. 1770) were counted in the 1790 Robeson Co. census as "other free persons". Likewise in the 1820 Robeson Co. census. In the 1830 Bledsoe, TN, census, they show up counted as "white".
He further writes that the 1790 Robeson census indicates that Isham Ivey and unknown wife had the following children(?): Silas Ivey (wife Treacy Cox b: Bet. 1770 - 1774) Jesse Ivey Austin Ivey (some ask whether this may be been John A. Ivey) Charity Ivey
(But, did census prior to 1850 actually list children by name?)

There is not a Charles Ivey in the 1830 census (nor any subsequent censuses) that matches this man. There are two Charles Ivey's, but they are obviously the Charles Ivey, born about 1767 (found in the 1820 census), and the Charles Ivey (b. 1790-1796) that married Susannah Britt (marriage bond 1811), who would have been too young to have had children those ages. However, we do find Charity Ivey in 1830:
2 females 20-30 (1800-1810)
1 female 40-50 (1780-1790)
These ages coincide with the 1820 census.
