Matthew was born in 1843 to George Washington Ivey Sr and Martha Eunice Smith. He passed away in 1915. [1]

Matthew Harris Ivey was born on 20 Jan 1843 in Warren, Georgia as the first child of George Washington Ivey and Martha Eunice W Smith. He had seven siblings, namely: Mary Frances "Fannie", James Thomas, John William "Johnnie" Sr, Washington Sterling, Sterling, George Franklin, and Eunice T B.

TIMELINE

16 Oct 1850 Matthew A Avy, age 7, living with his parents, George & Martha, along with his 4-year-old sister, Mary, in Division 90, Warren, Georgia. FamilySearch transcribes the last name “Avy” and Ancestry transcribes it as “Ivy”.[2]

1860 There is no record of his residence in the 1860 census record (approximately age 17). He does not appear in the household of his parents and family, nor in the household or living near the household of his future wife.

1864 One possible record lists a Matthew H Ivy, age 20, in the 1864 Census for Re-Organizing the Georgia Militia, born about 1844 in Warren, Georgia.

17 Jan 1867 At the age of 23, M.H. Ivy married Drucilla E McCrary, daughter of Jasper Newton McCrary and Drucilla Evans Wood, on 17 Jan 1867 in Warren, Georgia. [3] They had 7 children.

29 Jul 1867 Another possible record is the Georgia, Returns of Qualified Voters and Reconstruction Oath Books, 1867-1869, Registry Date of 29 Jul 1867 in the name of M M Ivey in the 19th Election District of Warren, Georgia.

18 Jul 1870 The 1870 census (18 Jul) lists him as Mathew Ivy (farmer), age 27 (b. abt 1843 in Georgia) living in Warren, Georgia with his wife, Drucilla (keeping house), and two of his children, Minnie (age 2) and Jasper (infant). The “value of the personal estate” is recorded as “200” but does not list a “value of real estate”. [4]

According to the census record on FamilySearch.org, he is living in the household of Nancy Hurley (indexed translation), age 78, b. abt 1791 in Virginia, and “without occupation”. I have not been able to connect Nancy to any of the Ivey or McCrary family members. The transcribed name of Hurley looks more like Ansley to me in the record.

There are two more household members listed: Marcus Ivy, age 5, b. abt 1864 in Georgia, and Mary N or H? Ivy, age 15, b. abt 1854 in Georgia. I have not been able to connect these children to the family. The 1870 census records do not designate household relationships. Marcus and Mary do not appear in any other records connected to the family of Matthew and Drucilla.

There are nearby neighbors with the Ivey surname. One is his mother, Martha E Ivy, with 4 of his siblings, John, Washington, Sterling, and Eunice. The other family is William Ivy & Susan Humphries Ivy, with 4 of their children: Martha, William, Peebles and Mary. I have not been able to connect them to the family. Surnames of other neighbors are: Fowler, McDaniel.

29 Jun 1880 At about the age of 36, Matthew Ivey lived in Warrenton, Warren, Georgia as head of household with his wife, Drucilla E Ivey, and 4 of his children: Minnie A Ivey, Jasper W Ivey, Olivia A Ivey, and Orlando M Ivey. Matthew is a farmer, Drucilla is a housekeeper and Minnie & Jasper are at school.[5]

There are a number of Ivey’s living nearby marked as black servants, listed as separate households. It is not know if this is part of the Matthew's farm, or of another farm. Other neighbors’ surnames: Kitchens, Rogers, Reese, Pitts.

A third possible record is the Selected U.S. Federal Census Non-Population Schedules, 1850-1880, enumeration date 29 Jun 1880 listing Mathew Ivey in District 425, Warren, Georgia.

30 June 1900 Matthew H Ivey was counted in the census of 1900 in Militia Districts 157, 159, Elim, Barnett, Warren, Georgia as head of household, at age 56. Living with his wife, Drucilla E Ivey (married 27 years), and 4 of his children: Olivia A Ivey, Nevil C Ivey, Osmer E Ivey, and Mary E Ivey. His occupation is recorded as “farmer” renting his farm. [6]

This record states Drucilla had 5 children, 4 were still living. They had already had 7 children by 1900, and all were still living. [Stillborn children are not counted in census records.] I’m not sure who the deceased child is, unless it is one of the 2 unknown children listed in the 1870 census.

Surnames of other neighbors: Wheeler, Norris. There are a large number of black farm laborers living nearby in separate households. The Norris family was very large, so they could have been laborers on the Norris farm.

There is an Ivey family living nearby with Head of Household Ephraim Ivey (b. abt 1856 in Ga), wife – Enola V Nelson Ivey (b. abt 1859 in Ga), and 5 children: Mary, Jessie, Jennie, Henry W, and Maude L. Ephraim Jesse is the son of Benjamin Henry Ivey & Mary Jane Ivey, grandson of Thomas Pate Ivey & Sancil Burkhalter Ivey and Benjamin Franklin Ivey and Sarah McDaniel Ivey. He would have been a cousin of Matthew Harris Ivey.

6 Apr 1910 At age 66, Mathew H Ivey lived in Norwood, Warren, Georgia, with his wife, Drucilla E Ivey. Mathew is working on his own account as an officer in the County and Drucilla is in the “home”. There are no other household members listed.[7]

This record states Drucilla had 7 children and 7 are still living.

Neighbors’ surnames: Anderson, Barksdale, Shurley, and Avery.

14 Jan 1915 Matthew Harris Ivey died on 14 Jan 1915 in Warren County, Georgia, and was buried after 14 Jan 1915 in Scruggs Cemetery, Norwood, Warren, Georgia.[8]

MILITARY RECORD No records have been found of Matthew’s military service, if any. In the one picture we have of him with his sons, it was observed that maybe his left hand appears to be disabled. We do not have any personal information from family members to prove or disprove this theory.
