Biography

Richard and Sarah Ivey were married on May 3, 1841. In that same year they emigrated to the U.S. They likely entered the country via New Orleans and sailed up the Mississippi River to Galena, WI. They resided in Galena for two years. Then they moved to Mineral Point, WI, a focal point of Cornish immigration, where they kept hotel four years until 1847. They then moved onto a farm near the small town of Moscow, WI (now a broad spot in a rural road) near the town of Blanchardville, WI. There were only 6 families living in Moscow when they settled there. Richard and Sarah had seven children: James, Catherine, Richard, John, Sarah, Henry Franklin Pierce, and William. They purchased 340 acres of land valued at $15.00 per acre. Richard served as the assessor of Moscow for 18 years and also held the position of Justice of the Peace for several years. His politics were Republican (liberal). In his obituary Richard was described as "a hard working, energetic man and stood high in the estimation of all who knew him". They were members of the United Brethren Church and both he and Sarah are buried in Graceland Cemetery in Blanchardville. Richard was 87 years, 11 months, and 4 days when he died; Sarah was 87 years, 4 months and 15 days when she died. Sarah was described as a "faithful, loving wife, mother and friend and was loved and respected by all who knew here.[1]
