Biography

Will: 10 Jun 1762. Adam Ivey of Edgecombe County (proved 28 September 1762). To sons Francis Ivey and Adam Ivey 5s each “for I have advanced them as much as I can afford.” Daughter Elizabeth Ivey household goods; daughter Sarah Ivey £25; daughterMartha Ivey £25 to be paid when she reaches age 21; daughter Mary Ivey £25 when she reaches age 20; son Lewis Ivey the 200-acre plantation “I bought of William Regerster” at age 21. To unnamed wife, household goods, the use of dwelling house and land for five years, and a loan of £50 until son George Ivey comes of age; George to receive £30 at age 21 and the other £20 at the death of “his mother.” Son Benjamin Ivey the 285-acre plantation “where I now live”. Son Benjamin Ivey named executor. Signed: Adam (x) Ivey [by his mark, a stylized “A”] Witness: Robert Simms, Nathan Barnes, Joseph Simms [Edgecombe County Will Book A, p208]

Note that four of the children are under 21 and all four daughters are unmarried. From later records, it appears that Adam, Francis, and Benjamin were relatively young, suggesting that Adam Ivey had married not much more than 25 years earlier. The unnamed wife was probably a second wife, for this will is unusual in specifically abrogating her dower right. It is interesting that Adam Ivey could not sign his name, but (as far as we know) his sons could.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Adam by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Adam:

I am a descendant of the Francis Ivey named in the "will". In my research, I have not encountered any reliable source indicating that a Francis "Benjamin" Ivey was a son of the testator. The will itself does not name a "Francis Benjamin Ivey", rather it includes separate sons, one named Francis who received five shillings and one named Benjamin who was named as executor of the will.

If anyone can find a trustworthy source that indicates this testator had a son named "Francis Benjamin Ivey", I will be surprised and extraordinarily enlightened.

Based on the "will" referenced, I am a descendant of the testator, Adam Ivey. From my reading, I doubt that the testator had a middle initial "A", but rather inserted a stylized A between the words Adam and Ivey as his "X mark". The testator was illiterate and used a stylized "A" to sign documents.

Ivey-588 and Ivey-867 are not ready to be merged because: Different birth dates and mothers need to be resolved before merging.

Ivey-303 and Ivey-867 do not represent the same person because: Birth and death years are decades apart. Without any further evidence to go on, this is not a match.

Ivey-588 and Ivey-867 appear to represent the same person because: names, dates, locations and relationships appear to match, except the parents. That can be discussed in the research notes
