Ralph was the son of Ralph Izard of Middlesex and Surrey, England, and his wife Elizabeth Pryor.[1]
He immigrated to the Province of Carolina in October 1682.[2] Over the next several years, he received grants for over 4,000 acres of land.[3]
Ralph soon became involved in politics under the Lords Proprietor. He supported the establishment of a parliament for the province and was elected to the First Assembly in 1692. He continued to represent Berkeley and Craven counties in various assemblies between 1692 and 1710. He was a member of the Anglican party and supported the establishment of the Church of England in Carolina.[4]
About 1686 Ralph married Mary, widow of John Smith (d. ca. 1682) and Arthur Middleton (d. 1685). She had inherited considerable property from her previous husbands, which eventually passed to Ralph. They had children Ralph and Walter.[1] Mary was dead by 6 November 1697.[1] [5]
He married about 1708 as his second wife Dorothy, widow of Christopher Smith. They had no children. Dorothy survived him and returned to England following his death.[1]
Ralph wrote his Will on 4 June 1706 (before his second marriage), and it was proved 24 January 1710/11. He mentions his sons Ralph and Walter, his mother Elizabeth in England and her brother Prior, his brother Benjamin, and brother [in-law] Calverly Bewicke of London.[6][1]
