Biography

Nils Einar Jönsson, also known as Nils Poppe, was a Swedish actor, comedian, film director, and screenwriter.

"He is primarily associated with folk comedies and received the Illis Quorum award in 1988. Poppe's films include Three Happy Fools (1942), The Actor(1943), Blue Jackets (1945), Sten Stensson comes to town (1945), Money - a tragicomic saga (1946), The Balloon (1946), Do not lose your appetite (1947), Soldier Bom (1948), The Count from the Alley (1949 ), Pappa Bom (1949), Det sjunde inseglet (1957) and Djävulens öga (1960)." [1]

Nils Einar Jönsson was born 31 May 1908 in Malmö, Sweden.

"Poppe's mother was unmarried and escorted him to a Danish foster mother in Malmö , who put him on a diet of bread dipped in beer. After two years, he was rescued from her by Anders and Amanda Jönsson at Möllevången in Malmö, who became his foster parents. His theatrical dreams began to sprout early and at school he showed off his comic talent."[1]

His first marriage was to Inga Landgré (born 6 August 1927) in 1949. The marriage ended in 1959. His second marriage was to Gunilla Poppe (born 1 December 1936) in 1965.

"Poppe lived from 1968 until his death in Domsten north of Helsingborg."[1]

Nils Poppe died from a stroke 28 June 2000, in Helsingborg, Sweden. He was buried in Allerum Church Cemetery in Lund Diocese, Skane County.
