Biography

William Jack jr. was born in Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire, Scotland to parent's William Jack, blacksmith and Helen (Thomson) Jack. His christening was recorded in the parish records in Cambusnethan on the 31 July 1825. [1]

At age 15 William's family were living in Newarthill,[2] a mining village within the Parish of Bothwell, Lanarkshire. [3] William along with his two younger brother's George (age 14( and John (age 13) were working in the coal mine.

Marriage

On the 27 June 1846 William married Lilias Samuel in Shotts, Lanarkshire. [4] They moved into their home on Hamilton Road, Newarthill. The following five years they welcomed their first two children William Jack and Jean Jack.[5]

  • Notes: Newarthill, a village, in that part of the parish of Bothwell ........, in the heart of a district abounding with coal and ironstone ; and the inhabitants are chiefly employed in collieries, and in the iron and steel works which are carried on in the immediate vicinity.

This wasn't William's only life change, he left his work at the coal mine and became a Flesher. A flesher is an old Scots term for a butcher, a trade he expanded over the years to become a Flesher and Spirit Merchant.

Until William's death in 1863 the house in Hamilton Road was home to William, Lilias and their 7 children.[6]
