Biography

Eliza was baptised on 17 July 1831 in Gwennap, Cornwall, England, daughter of William Jacka (smith) and Mary residing in St. Day Gwennap.[1]

Eliza immigrated at the age of 18 on the Rajah, with her father William, stepmother and siblings. They arrived in Adelaide, South Australia on 6/1/1849. [3] The Ships Surgeon's return it said that she was to work for Mr Venn a butcher in Port Adelaide for at least one month. Her wage was going to be 15s that included provision of lodging & work. .[4]

When she married her occupation was listed as tailoress and was living at Light Square. She married her first husband Thomas Smith in St John's Church Adelaide.

In 1852 she went to the Victorian Goldfields with her husband. After his death in 1860 she may have gone to New Zealand with her inlaws as by 1916 her son Thomas had been living in New Zealand for 55 years. She later returned to Adelaide where she remarried and lived until she died.

FUNERAL NOTICE CURTIS.-The FRIENDS of the late Mrs. ELIZA CURTIS are respectfully informed that her Funeral will leave the residence of her son (Mr. Harry Smith), No.158 Wright-street, On THURSDAY, at 4 p.m., for the West-terrace Cemetery.

Death records have her age as 75.

She is buried in West Terrace Cemetery Adelaide.[6]

Research Notes

Date of Birth: Another source has her birth date as 6/4/1833. Another has the location as St Day. Age in the 1841 census supports a birth year of 1831. Age on the passenger list also supports a birth year of 1831. Age in her second marriage record supports a birth year of 1831.
