Research Notes

It is difficult to ascertain who the parents of Eliza Thomas Jacka as no baptism or birth records have been located. Her mother was single in 1861 and living with her sister although her sister has a young child she does not.[14] By the 1871 Census her mother is living with her paternal aunt and Eliza is listed as well although she is described as a niece also rather than as a grandniece.[15] Her birth may have been registered using her unidentified father’s surname.

If Eliza was the niece of Eliza Quintrell like Mary Ann (Jacka) Dobb (1840-1905) then she would also likely be descended from one of Eliza Quintrell brothers, however, this seems unlikely. Therefore it has been assumed that she is the illegitimate daughter of Mary A Jacka and therefore carries the surname of her mother rather than her father. She was born when her mother was 21 before she married William James Dodd a widow 19 years her mother's senior.

Eliza is missing in the 1861 Census, she may have been looked after by someone else as her mother had to work during the day, however, more research is needed to be done to confirm this.
