Biography

John Jacka was baptised in St Buryan, born on 6 May 1701. The son of John Jacka & Jone[1]

Not much is known about the Jacka family pre-1760 other than that they were in and/or near the St Buryan area. No marriage has yet been located for the couple who are thought to have been wed sometime in 1729 before the birth of their first child. All four of John and Elizabeth's children were born in the St Buryan parish.

  1. William Jacka (1731 - 1771) no record of a marriage has yet been located
  2. Thomas Jacka (1733 - 1796) married Elizabeth Gilbert in 1760
  3. Mary (Jacka) Richards (1735 - ) married Francis Richards in 1760 in St Buryan
  4. Abraham Jacka (1739 - 1820) married Anne Shutford in 1770

John Jacka was buried on 27 March 1740 in St. Buryan, Cornwall, England.[2] [3]

Research Notes

'Note 1 - Discounting Elizabeth (Keigwin) Jacka (bef.1695-) as the wife of John Jacka
An Elizabeth (Keigwin) Jacka (bef.1695-) married a John (Jacka) Jacco (abt.1695-) on the 29 Dec 1716.
This is not this John Jacka based on the following reasoning:-
If this is John Jacka and Elizabeth Kiegwin were married on 29 Dec 1716 it would be strange that they didn’t have their first child until 1731 which is a long time after they marry. Even stranger that after their first child they then go on and keep having children until 1739 which means that Elizabeth would have been having children over a 23 year period assuming that she had her first child the year after they got married.
An alternative theory could be that John Jacka married two Elizabeths, and the first Elizabeth is not Elizabeth Kiegwin.
An alternative couple has been identified as John Jacka and Elizabeth Kiegwin/Keigwin which is more consistent with the marriage date of 29 Dec 1716.
This couple is thought to have had the following children:-

  1. John Jacka (1717 - )
  2. Elizabeth Jacka (1720 - )
  3. Joan (Jacka) Downing (1724 - )
  4. Ann Jacka (1727 - ).

Note 2 - Discounting Elizabeth (Cock) Jacka (1724-) as the wife of John Jacka
An Elizabeth Cock (1724 - ) married John Jacka (bef.1717-) on June 18, 1744 in Paul.
This is not this John Jacka based on the following reasoning:-
That this John died before Elizabeth Cock’s children were born and appear to have resided in Paul rather than St Buryan, Cornwall, England.
This couple is thought to have had the following children all born in Paul, Cornwall:-

  1. Anne Jacka (1746 - 1746)
  2. Mary (Jacko) Richards (1746 - )
  3. Anne Jacko (1748 - )
  4. Sarah Jacka (1750 - )
  5. Martha (Jacka) Burgess (1753 - 1834)
  6. Blanch (Jacka) Kelynack (1754 - ~1855).

Note 3 - Looking for the wife of John Jacka
The following original records have been reviewed in an effort to locate the wife of John Jacka and the mother of his children thought to have been wed around 1729, her name is listed as Elizabeth on the children's baptism records.

Search question "Locate the marriage for John Jacka & Elizabeth ?? [or other first names] circa 1729, in and around St Buryan where they had their children baptised"

The following original records have been reviewed in the "England, Cornwall Parish Registers, 1538-2010" on the FamilySearch website.

St Buryan Cornwall, Baptisms, marriages, burials, 1718-1812 - negative result (image 49 of 88) to 1735(image 51 of 88), No other online Church of England Parish registers for marriage that covers this period.

Adjacent parishes of St Levan, Sennen, St Just in Penwith, Sancreed and Paul were also examined:-

There are 2 Free Reg entries for marriage. the first is: (no spouse) Marriage record. Cornwall St Buryan, Church St Berian the Virgin, Phillimore's transcript. Marriage date 1702/1703. Groom forename John. Groom surname Jacka. Notes: Marriage took place after 26 Dec 1702 and before 12 May 1703.. Transcribed by Barty. Credit Elizabeth Robertson. File line no 261.

the 2nd: Marriage record. Cornwall, Paul, Church St Pol de Leon. Marriage date 29 Dec 1716. Groom forename John. Groom surname Jacka. Groom parish Paul. Bride forename Elizabeth. Bride surname Keigwin. Bride parish Paul. Transcribed by Brenda Harrison. File line no 205.

Neither of these two seems to fit this John and wife Elizabeth as their first child was only born in 1731 unless they married earlier and didn't have kids for a while or there are missing children prior to 1731. We also have no sure surname of Elizabeth (the bride). The second marriage shows the parish as Paul, which I don't think is correct as John's birth and death ere in St Buryan.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

Jacka-91 and Jacka-23 appear to represent the same person because: I think thatJohn could have been born in St Buryan but moved to his wife’s parish of Paul where they had their first children and then they move back to his parish in St Buryan and continued to have children. This also fits because his baptism says his mother was Jone not Jane.

This is great work, but can anyone connect this John Jacka b.1701 to John Jacka b. 1777 who married Elizabeth Rule. It seems that it would be the same family but i haven't been able to get back that far
