Biography

Elizabeth was born in 1861, the daughter of William Jacka and Charlotte Williams.[1]

Elizabeth must have arrived in South Australia sometime between July 1871 and Sep 1874, with her parents.[3] Elizabeth married twice:

  1. First marriage was to William James Crase on 18 February 1885 in Moonta, South Australia.[4] William died on 1 January 1934 in South Australia.[5] [6]
  2. Second marriage was to James Bettess on 20 April 1936 in South Australia.[7]

Elizabeth died on 26 September 1938 and was buried in Moonta Cemetery, South Australia.[8]

BETTESS.—On the 26th of September, at private hospital. Elizabeth Ann Bettess (formerly Crase). beloved wife of James Bettess, of 2 Christie avenue. Monreith, and loving mother of Harry, Ewart, Roy, Jasper and Mrs. J. Allen, in her 78th year. She was survived by five children from her first marriage. Harry, Ewart, Roy, Jasper and Mrs J Allen.[9] [10]

Elizabeth was mentioned on a memorial in Moonta Cemetery, Moonta, District Council of Copper Coast, South Australia, Australia with a death date of 26 Sep 1938.[11]

"In Loving Memory of ELIZABETH ANN. Beloved wife of William J. Crase. Died 26th Sep.1938. Aged 76 years. "Peace Perfect Peace."

Research Notes

Arrival in Australia: We know Elizabeth and her parents migrated to Australia in 1871 but as they were in the 1871 Census in England it must be after 2 April 1871.[3] [12]

Birth records have her middle initial as R perhaps for her paternal grandmother's maiden name of Richards but latter records have her middle name as Ann.

Jacka-1321 and Jacka-854 appear to represent the same person because: These two profiles are for the same person, this was probably not picked up earlier as her final surname was spelt a slightly different way
