Biography

Elizabeth is 6 years old in 1860, the youngest child of Hezekiah Jackson, a farm laborer, and Malinda, who was born a Phillips. Hezekiah was 45 and Malinda 44, in that year. Both were born in North Carolina. Also in the house were "Betty's"siblings, Pauline, age 19, William, age 16 and Martha A., age 14. [1]

In 1870, Betty is 15 years old and living with her parents. Hezekiah is a 56 year old farmer and her mother is 55 and keeping house. Her older sisters Paulina (29) and Martha (24) are also living with them. Brother William is missing, but is old enough (26) to be living on his own or to have started his own family. [2]

Ten years later, her mother is a widow, approximately 63 years old and keeping house. Her sister Paulina (Polina) is now 40, and the three of them are living together, but none of them list an occupation out side the home. Sister Martha is missing, but I believe she had married. [3]

By 1900, Paulina is considered the head of the household, although their mother, Malinda is still alive, age 83. Paulina and Elizabeth are the only two of Malinda's children still living, of the nine she gave birth to. This means Martha is now deceased, and is possibly the mother of Julius W. Rittle, Paulina and Elizabeth's nephew, who is living and working on the farm. He could be living there because both of his parents are dead, or because the women, now 44, 60 and 83, needed help on the farm. Julius is 20 years old at this time. [4]

In 1910, Betty is living alone, age 55, and renting a house. Her occupation is sewing fine tobacco bags, which many women in her community did. She is single and childless. [5]

By 1930, she is 74, and still living alone. She list no occupation and is paying $3 per month in rent. [6] She died in January of the next year. [7]

She is buried in Stony Knoll cemetery, in East Bend, Yadkin County, NC as Aunt Betty Jackson. Her gravestone was erected by her friends. [8]

Research Notes

The death index lists her date of death as January 12th, [7] but her tombstone lists it as the eleventh.[8]
