James was born on about 31 August 1850 in Missouri. [1] He was the son of Hayden Jackson and Louisa Jane Williams.[2] [3][4]

In 1856 his father was killed in Camden, Ray, Missouri.[5] It is believe that he and many of his older siblings may have gone to live with other relatives for a period of time.

In 1880 James Jackson was living with his wife and children in Daviess county, as enumerated on the census: Jackson family: James, m, w, 27 (abt 1853), head, laborer, MO, -,-; Mary, w, f, 23 (abt 1857), wife, mrd, keeping house, mo, ky, mo; Charles, m, w, 2 (abt 1878), son, mo, mo, mo. In 1910 James and family were living in Albany, Gentry county Missouri, next door to grown daughters Alice May Jackson Butcher and Lilly Jackson Steele , enumerated as follows:

  1. Note year of birth variations found in the public record, death certitifate states 31 Aug 1850 (note other errors on death cert, i.e., name of his parents); census records indicate 1853, and Aug 1848; His headstone indicates 31 Aug 1848. Missouri, USA. Based on my research, 31 Aug 1850 seems the most likely, as was not listed with his family in the 1850 census. It is most likely that he was yet born when the family was enumerated.
