Biography

Cecile Eileen Jackson Smith died September 12, 2004, at her home in Salt Lake City, Utah. She accepted the diagnosis of pancreatic cancer with immense courage and faith. She was born August 7, 1919, in Salt Lake City, the only surviving child of Frederick Alma and Maebel Campbell Jackson. Married Briant G. Smith on March 16, 1943 in the Salt Lake Temple. She was deeply loved by her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Cecile was a Music and Education major at the University of Utah. She taught school in the years before her marriage, then turned her many talents to the creation of a home that was characterized by a spirit of love and unusual warmth. The many friends of her children who found acceptance and loving welcome there, her numerous piano students who were wonderfully trained there, her new and her lifelong friends, especially the "Timps", who socialized there, the Cub Scouts who had uproarious fun there, and her four children who were blessed to learn faith, compassion, love of beauty, and the paramount importance of family ties there, can all testify to the profound influence of this exceptional woman. Few realized the health restraints which she patiently and quietly bore as she went about her life of love and service. Her many years of church activity included callings in all the auxiliaries of the LDS Church. She was a member of the DUP. She took seriously her family history obligations. She stood by her husband as he presided over the Austria Vienna Mission (1979-1982), evidencing her faith and courage by fulfilling this call despite her grief over the unexpected death of her daughter, Rosemary S. Higgs, just days prior to her departure for the Mission Training Center. Upon her return from Vienna, she participated in the Ensign Stake Records Extraction Program for 15 faithful years. She is survived by her beloved husband of 61 years, Briant G. Smith, by her children Suzanne S. and Stephen Jones, Sue A. and Lynn B. Higgs, Briant J. and Susan G. Smith, and Christine S. and Stanley D. Rasmussen, by her 17 grandchildren and their spouses, and by the nine great-grandchildren she cherished. The family wishes to offer heartfelt thanks to Hospice for Utah and Home Option for their capable and tender care of their mother in her final days. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004, at the Salt Lake Ensign Stake Center 135 A Street, Salt Lake City, Utah at 12 noon. Friends may call Fri. evening from 6-8:30 p.m. at the Larkin Mortuary, 260 E. South Temple, and one hour prior to services at the Stake Center. Interment at the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
