Biography

There was "apparently" another Sarah Jackson, other than the Sarah who was dau. of Robert Jackson d. c. 1683, who m. Nathaniel Moore b.1642 - d. 1698 ...

Thomas Moore, a brother to the above mentioned Nathaniel, had a son named Nathaniel who supposedly also m. a woman named Sarah Jackson, her parentage and exact b. & d. dates are as yet unknown.

Sources

  • "Moore" by Arthur Clayton Moore, (self published), Hudson, Ohio, 1982.

Notes

This note was posted on "The Family Quilt" concerning the confusion about her marriage to Nathaniel Moore.

Quote from reader concerning conflicting data about Nathaniel Moore: "Most sources I see match the Nathaniel Moore who was b. 1642, son of Thomas Moore and Martha Youngs, to Sarah Vail, the dau. of Jeremiah Vail. This Nathaniel's will of 19 Apr 1698 mentions his wife Sarah and a brother-in-law Jeremiah Vail, which seems to suggest this is correct. (this suggestion is incorrect, see below)

From the "Southold Anniversary Book:
Sarah Vail's marriage to Nathaniel Moore seems to be based on an entry in Nathaniel's will referring to Sarah's brother Jerimiah as his "brother-in-law".
"It was hastily supposed from this that he had married a sister of Jeremiah Vail; but this was afterwards found to be an error. Vail had married Anne, the widow of Nathaniel's brother, Benjamin Moore, and in that way was his brother-in-law. Sarah, daughter of Robert Jackson, survived Nathaniel Moore, and died his widow on 10th June, 1733.
From John Maltby: [1]
Proof that Sarah, the wife of Nathaniel Moore (b. 1642) was a daughter of Robert Jackson is found in Jackson’s will, probated in 1685, in which he mentioned “my daughter Sarah the wife of Nathaniell Moor.”

The Nathaniel Moore who married Sarah Jackson* and was father of John Jackson Moore is generally identified as this Nathaniel's nephew, the son of Thomas Moore and supposedly Elizabeth Mott. This does seem to match the birthdate of a son John in 1691 better than the uncle Nathaniel.

* The Sarah Jackson (this profile), that m. the nephew Nathaniel, is of unknown parentage and/or exact b. & d. dates.

The most reliable source I have found giving this position is Southold Index of 1698. I have seen the Jacob Milton Bergen book and believe the author confused the two Nathaniels, not hard to imagine given all the Sarahs, Thomases, etc. floating around, and not much primary evidence." Jrich at www.werelate 30 Jan 2009

I, Janie, have studied the Southold Index of 1698, Bunker's page 250 about the Moores, and the article published in "The Record" Vol 15, April 1884, pgs 59 & 60 and have come to see that Jrich was correct. So the source references to the Jacob Milton Bergen book have been removed for this particular reference. (Town of Southold, Long Island) "Personal index prior to 1698, and index of 1698" by Moore, Charles B.: compiled and copied for the purpose of having corrections suggested and greater fullness and accuracy attained and preserved, especially as to the first or early settlers of the town, including all named in or prior to the list of 1698. Pg 104: Moore, Sarah*, wid. of Nathaniel, d. 10 Jun 1733.

* Again, this is the Sarah that m. the uncle Nathaniel 1642-1698.

Also conclusions drawn by User:Jrich at (http://www.werelate.org/w/index.php?title=Person:Sarah_Jackson_%28151%29&msg=watched: "Macy, Harry Jr. "Robert Jackson's Wives and Children", in The New York genealogical and biographical record. (New York, New York: New York Genealogical and Biographical Society), Vol. 131 Number 1, page 6-7, Jan. 2000. Robert Jackson contested the will of William Washburn in 1659 on behalf his two daughters, children of a deceased daughter of William. An expense submitted mentioned caring for these daughters for 3 years, leading to the conclusion the mother died 1656. Sarah was the oldest of the two, so born about 1654.

Clair,

The dates you put in are incorrect and belong to the wife of the uncle Nathaniel b. 1642.

We do not know the exact b. and/or d. dates for this Sarah, nor her parentage.

also, the CLN you put in of "Moore" is correct, but I purposely left it off (for now), just to make them easier to distinguish.

I did not remove the Notes you added, and added to them (pls read) ... There is another hint that helps clarify the Vail controversy, that I need to dig up and add to the notes.

Thanks,

Dan
