Percival Reid (aka Jackson) was born 1876 in Sandhurst, Victoria (now Bendigo), Australia, the son of Elizabeth Reid. Because his mother was not married, his birth is indexed under his mother's maiden name. [1]
His mother married John Jackson the following year.
1st Marriage. In 1902, in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, as Percival Jackson, he married Jane Elizabeth Tatterson. [2]
Percival and Jane returned to Victoria where, sadly, he lost his wife and child during the following years.
2nd Marriage. By 1908, several years later, Percival had found his way to New Zealand, where he wed Mildred Ashby. [6] They had at least six children in New Zealand: Olive Mabel (1909); Hugh Percival (1910); Athena Thelma (1912); Gladys Madge (1914); Doris Eva (1917); and Leslie Norman (1919). Mildred died 8th September 1920.
In 1920, he was widowed for a second time.
3rd marriage. In 1921, Percival married Amelia Alice Jessie Vowless. [7]
Electoral Roll, 1938. The 1938 New Zealand Electoral Roll shows Percival and Amelia enrolled at Ongarue, where he was a farmer. Also in Ongarue were Percival's children: Hugh Percival Jackson, farm hand, and Olive Mabel Jackson, spinster. [8]
Death, Burial. The Ruapehu District Council online cemetery records, for Taumaruni New Cemetery, shows Percival Jackson passed away on 23rd June 1942, aged 65 years. On 25th June, his remains were interred in the Church of England section, plot 14, row E - the grave next to Amelia who had predeceased him several years beforehand. [9] His death registration shows his age as 66 years. [10]
Originaly, the Birth and Death in this profile was: Percival Jackson was born about 1880. He passed away about 1920. *Unsourced family tree handed down to Chris Cameron.
His age at death in 1942 gives Percival a birth year of about 1877. Most online trees at Ancestrycom attribute him as a Bendigo-born man, Percy Charles Jackson, but that man's death has been accounted for, in Australia (note added by Christine Randall, Dec 2019)
Percival REID vs JACKSON. Because his mother was not married, his birth is indexed under his mother's maiden name, but this does not mean that was ever used as his surname. Only forenames are included in the 'child name' column of a Victorian birth registration. If his parents were already living together, before they wed, then Percival was probably always known as Percival Jackson. Often, in these cases, the father's surname is given as a second forename. Name Update: 1910, is named as Percival Reid in his mother's will. (added 8 Jun 2020) Because of this, have chosen Reid as birth name during the latest merge. (Christine, 1 Mar 2021)
Frances and Christine Randall have extremely strong DNA ties, of unknown origin on Christine's mother's side.
Update 30 May 2021: due to a new mutual DNA match, it appears that Christine and Frances relate on Christine's paternal grandfather's line:
