Discrepancy: The UELAC profile for James Jackson is conflating the biographies of 2 men who emigrated to Canada.

  • James Jackson (b.1740 in England; parents unknown; fought in Jessup's Loyal Rangers)
    • Settled ca.1770 in Skenesborough, New York (what is today Whitehall, near Lake Champlain, on the Vermont border)
    • Wife Ann, probably born in England; 4 known children & approx. birth years were Thomas (1767), Catherine (1769), Anne/Nancy (1772), William (1777).
    • Settled after war in Ernestown/Bath, Lennox & Addington
    • Died 1808 & buried on Amherst Island
  • James Jackson (b. New York state; lived 1773-1834; parents Henry & Sara; perhaps fought in War of 1812 given that his children filed UEL land claims).
    • Settled after war in Augusta (Leeds & Grenville) and Mountain (Dundas) Townships
    • The "Children" and "Biography" sections of the UELAC page clearly pertain to this James Jackson (1773-1834).

More Jackson Loyalists in early Ontario:

  • 1808: Three Jacksons (Jacob and sons James & Isaac) are listed as landowners in Hallowell, Prince Edward County (near today's Belleville, Ontario). This family came directly to Canada from Long Island, New York.[1]
  • Jethro Jackson UE (born 1758)[2] married Zelicia Coggelshall and they had at least 9 children. Died in 1825 in Richmond (near Ernestown).

List of 11 children[4] of James Jackson (1773-1834) who filed UEL land claims in Upper Canada in the 1800s:[5]

  • Levina JACKSON [+ William CAMPBELL / KIMSALL; living in Portland, Ontario, in 1840]
  • Diadema JACKSON [+ Cornelius MILLS; living in Loughborough in 1840]

How did his children qualify for UEL land? Was James in the War of 1812?

  5. The Reid book gives this James Jackson's residence as Ernesttown/Augusta/Mountain, but he appears to be conflating several James Jacksons. Augusta (Leeds & Grenville) and Mountain (Dundas) are probably correct, but not Ernestown, which was the home of the other James Jackson (b.1740 in England).

Can anyone explain the inconsistencies in his childrens petitions? His will names sons George, James, Elisha, and Thomas. Among the petitions of all his children, he is referred to three times as James Jackson Junior. Twice he is referred to as James Jackson formerly of Ernestown now of Augusta.

Did both James Jacksons live in Ernestown? If this James Jackson is James Jackson Jr., how does he fit as son of Henry?
