Military Service
Private in Company A of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the first regiment in the United States to enlist men of color during the Civil War. Enlisted on 3 March 1863 from Great Barrington, Massachusetts. He was about 18 years old, single and working as a waiter when he enlisted. He was wounded and missing in action on 18 July 1863 at the Second Battle of Fort Wagner.[7]
His brothers Francis and Levi served in Company C.
NOTE: There is also a James H. Jackson in Co. D, and a James L. Jackson in Co. C of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry.
Emilio, pp. 341, 432 lists Private James Henry Jackson of Company A as missing in action both in the 1892 and 1894 edition of his book, but another military record uploaded to Private Jackson's Find a Grave images indicates that he was only wounded in action. And there's definitely an 1890 record.
Raymoure-1: Both the Great Barrington, Massachusetts and Troy, New York Veterans Schedules in 1890 have entries for James H. Jackson of Company A of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry.
