Biography

Sebes Jackson was born on 10 July 1737 to Sebes and Abigail (Patten) Jackson in Newtown (now Newton), Massachusetts. He was the second of the name by his parents, his older brother having died in infancy.[1]

He married Mary Bacon on 19 November 1767 in Newton.[2]

Sebes and Mary (Bacon) Jackson are not known to have had any children.

On 6 November 1766, Sebes' uncle Edward Jackson of Newtown had purchased land in the northwest part of Westminster, Massachusetts from James and Phebe Ross of Westminster,[3] and he went on to acquire additional plots there. It may have been land of Edward's on which Sebes was settled.

Mary (Bacon) Jackson died sometime before 16 March 1778, on which date Sebes married, second, Elizabeth (Jenkins) Walton, widow of Jacob, in Westminster.[4]

Children of Sebes and Elizabeth (Jenkins) Jackson:[5]

  • Mary Bacon Jackson, prob. b. 21 December 1779 1778,[6] m. Thomas Manley
  • Lucy Jackson, b. 25 January 1780, m. William Rand[7]
  • Catherine Jackson ("Caty"), b. 12 February 1782, m. Ezra Wood[7]
  • Esther Jackson, b. 16 April 1784, m. Edmund Nichols[7]

31 December 1799 -- John and Elizabeth [(Walton)] Raymond [(Sebes' step-daughter)] of Westminster, Massachusetts to Sebes Jackson of same, $700, a certain messuage of tract of upland in Barre, Vermont in second division of lots, drawn to the original right of Jonathan Evans of Barre, about 100 acres.[8]

Sebes executed his last will on 13 June 1803, leaving Elizabeth, his wife, with his whole estate under instruction it was to be divided equally among their four daughters at her decease, and making a particular bequest to her of the land he'd purchased from his step-daughter and her husband in Barre, and naming Elizabeth as executrix.[9] Elizabeth was granted letters of administration on 18 October 1803, with sureties Daniel Bartlett, physician, and Nathan Raymond, yeoman, all of Westminster.[10]

  6. Mary B. Jackson can't have been born in December 1779 if Lucy was born in January 1780. December 1778 is consistent with conception shortly after her parents were married. Spurling asserts she was born on 21 October 1778, which would make either her birth premature or her conception before her parents were married. The most likely possibility seems to be that the clerk wrote a 9 where an 8 should have been in her birth year. The origin of Spurling's assertion of October isn't known.
