He was the eldest son of John Jackson and Katherine (McKinney of Dundonald Parish, Ballyregan, Down County, Ireland). He was born about 1690 in Ireland (suggested locations include ...

born in Ballyreagan County Down County, Ireland ?
born in Newtownards, County Down County, Ireland ?

His claimed lineage is ...

  1. John Jackson m: Katherine McKinney
  2. Joseph Jackson m: Elizabeth Vance
  3. Andrew Jackson, Sr.
  4. Andrew Jackson, Jr., USA President#7.

He and his brothers became prominent physicians and surgeons, all practicing in the Belfast vicinity in towns that were only about 35 miles apart, in adjoining counties ...

Carrickfergus, Antrim County, Ireland and
Newtown, Limavady, Londonderry County, Ireland.

Joseph practiced first at Carrickfergus, then at Belfast and later moved to Londonderry and Limavady in County Londonderry, Ireland. [1]

Dr. Joseph Jackson first married Elizabeth VANCE of the noted VANCE family of Scotland and Ulster, Ireland. Their children included ...

  1. Hugh Jackson (officer with Braddock and with Wolf to Québec)
  2. David Jackson, b: 1730 Newtown Limavady, Derry County, Ireland (emig: Pennsylvania 1762) d: 1818
  3. Robert Jackson, emig: America (descendents untraced)
  4. Elizabeth Jackson, emig: Carolinas m: James Crawford

  7. (perhaps other daughters).

By 1746 Dr. Joseph Jackson had married secondly to Lady Mary CARR, a sister of Lord James CARR. Mary had first married a man by the surname of JACKSON and had one son named Hugh (who emigrated to America). After Mary's first husband died, she then became the third wife of Dr. Joseph JACKSON (who was supposedly unrelated to her first JACKSON husband). Dr. Joseph Jackson and Mary had a daughter Margaret Jackson who was born about 1746 in Down County, Ireland. Margaret's parents opposed her marriage, because her mother was of the nobility and the McCaugheys were plebians. Nevertheless, Margaret JACKSON married on 28 Nov 1769 in Newtown, Limavady, Ireland to William McCAUGHEY, a weaver. Margaret emigrated to America in 1773. [2]

He died about 1765 in Limavady, County Londonderry, Ireland.

his wife, Elizabeth (daughter of said Grizel & John) ...
Additions: John DENHAM & all that fell within townland formerly possessed by Robert JACKSON. With the reversion & reversions [??] rents and services of the same lands by indenture bearing date 01 Nov 1677 ..
Note : From Robert JACKSON (c1619-1679)
to his son John JACKSON (1667-1725), who then conveyed
it to either his son Dr. Thomas JACKSON (c1700-1779)
or his brother Thomas JACKSON (1679-1713) who then
conveyed it back to John JACKSON (1667-1725) who then
conveyed it to his son Dr. Joseph JACKSON (b: 1690).

Since there are 2 known wives for this Dr. Joseph JACKSON and a possible third unknown wife, it is possible that the unknown wife could be Grizel MAGEE and it could be that they had a son John JACKSON as well as a daughter Elizabeth who married Hugh REED.

Memorandum

A memorandum preserved by Jackson among his papers (and with out evidence of its reliability) asserts that there were four brothers in Ireland by the name of Jackson, each of whom occupied "a large farm" as freeholder. The memorandum said that all of these Jacksons were devoted to the Established Kirk of Scotland and were noted for their hospitality. The youngest brother, Andrew Jackson lived near Castlereagh, about 124 miles from Carrickfergus. Andrew sold his property in 1765 and emigrated to America, landing at Charleston, South Carolina and removed to the back country.

When Jackson and Crawford saiied for America, one unnamed brother resided at Ballynisca in Car-Donnell (aka Dundonald) Parish and was father of Samuel Jackson, who became senior partner in the Philadelphia, PA firm of Jackson and Bayard, with whom William Patterson, of Baltimore, MD lived when a youth.

Another unnamed brother, resided at Knocknagoney, Holywood Parish and his daughter married James Suffern of New York (a brother of John Suffern, a prominent state politician).

The fourth unnamed brother resided at Bally Willy in Bangor Parish and was called "Laird Jackson"

This memorandum could have been prepared after the appearance of Major John Reid's book and there is an evident purpose to enhance Jackson's social standing. [3]

Presidential line

One mile north of Carrickfergus in County Antrim, Ireland is the ancestral cottage home of Andrew Jackson, Sr. now home to the Andrew Jackson Centre [phone: (0196 03) 64972] located right off A2 in Boneybefore, Carrickfergus, County Antrim, Ireland. The town is quite large for the time and even large for the current time. [4]

Some claim that the father of Andrew Jackson, Sr. was Hugh Jackson, [5] The Remini book states Andrew Jackson, Sr. lived 120 miles away from Carrickfergus.

There is also the fact that an Alexander Hutchinson was an executor of the Will of Dr. Joseph Jackson's father, John Jackson. Andrew Jackson, Sr. married Elizabeth Hutchinson.

Much is recounted of the families of VANS=VANCE in an oral genealogy from a grandson of John VANCE who in turn was the son of Lancelot VANCE. [6] Unfortunately he missed one generation and stated that a daughter of John VANCE married Andrew Jackson, Sr. when in fact, the daughter had married the father, Dr Joseph Jackson. As we know Andrew Jackson, Sr. had married Elizabeth Hutchinson. [7] However Balbirnie's book does show who the VANCEs married by surname, both in Ulster, Ireland and in America. Many genealogy trees use this book without actually knowing what the source is.

The "Pittsburgh Post-Gazette" also claims the father of Andrew Jackson, Sr. was a Hugh, but that says his father was Thomas Jackson and that he was from Ballyregan in Dundonald, Down County, Ireland. [8] It was Thomas, the son of John Jackson and brother of Dr. Joseph Jackson that was from Ballyregan as he had land settled on him at Ballyregan in their father's Will.

President Andrew JACKSON's lineage has long been contentious. According to the research of Tim Dowling and some WorldConnect family trees, this Joseph Jackson is thought to be the presidential grandfather. However, according to "Ancestors of American Presidents" compiled by Gary Boyd Roberts & New England Historic Genealogical Society of Boston, MA in 2009 p19, the presidential lineage goes like this ...

  1. Thomas Jackson
  2. Hugh Jackson
  3. Andrew Jackson, m: Elizabeth Hutchinson
  4. Andrew Jackson, President#7, m: Rachel Stockley Donelson.

Jackson-26567 and Jackson-5666 are not ready to be merged because: Supposed sibling Jackson-937 birth date does not coincide. Not sure if Jackson-937 is actually a sibling or not. Doesn't appear that he is because his birthdate is 1750 and Joseph's birthdate is 1690.
