Biography

Origins

Hannah Jackson, daughter of Edward Jackson and his first wife, Frances _____, was baptized 1 May 1634[1][2] at St. Mary Whitechapel, London.[3][4]

Immigration

Hannah removed to America with her parents and several of her siblings (it is thought that her brother Sebas was born on the voyage). The date the Jackson family immigrated to America and the ship on which they sailed are unknown. Their probable arrival is estimated to be between February and October of 1643.[1][4]

The family settled in Cambridge, Massachusetts in an area that later became known as Cambridge Village. In May 1678, her father and 51 residents of Cambridge Village, living on the south side of the Charles River, petitioned to be separated from Cambridge and become a new town. In 1691, the village became known as Newton (new town).[1][5] There are records existing in both Cambridge and Newton for the same events.

Hannah, her husband and their son John Jr. were named in the will of her father dated 11 June 1681.[1]

Marriage and Children

Hannah married John Ward[1] about in 1650 in Cambridge, Massachusetts.[2][6] John was the son of William Ward, but his origins in England are unknown. A record has not yet been found for their marriage. They had the following children, all were born or baptized in Cambridge (later Newton), Massachusetts:

  1. Hannah,[2] eldest child,[7] born about 1651.[8] Hannah married Thomas Greenwood[9] and they had children. Hannah probably died before 1687.[10]
  2. John, born 26 January 1653[7] and died 5 June 1654, in Newton[2]
  3. Rebecca, born 15 June 1655[7] and died unmarried 28 August 1735 in Newton[2]
  4. John, born 8 March 1658.[2][7] John married Mary Spring and died 5 June 1727 age 69 in Newton.[9]
  5. Elizabeth, born 18 June 1660.[2][7][11] Elizabeth married Joshua Fuller and died 17 August 1691 in Newton.[9]
  6. Deborah, born 19 July 1662[2][7] or 19 October 1662.[12] Deborah married John Wyeth.[13]
  7. William, born 19 November 1664.[2][7][14] He married Abigail Spring; William of Waltham died 23 January 1752 in Newton.[9]
  8. Richard, born 15 November 1666.[2][7][15] He married Thankful Trowbridge; Deacon Richard died 27 March 1739 in Newton.[9]
  9. Mercy, born 27 January 1668,[7][16] died unmarried 4 June 1685 in Newton[2][9][17]
  10. Edward, born 13 March 1671.[2][7][18] He married Grace Lovering.[19]
  11. Eleazer, born 26 February 1672.[2][7][20] Eleazer married Deliverance Trowbridge and had children.[21] He died 18 January 1750/1 in Oxford, Massachusetts.[22]
  12. Jonathan, born 22 April 1674.[2][7][23] Jonathan married Abigail Hall and died 16 July 1723 in Newton.[9]
  13. Joseph, born 15 November 1677.[2][7][23] He died 26 November 1742 in Newton.[9] He married Esther Kenrick and had issue.[24]

After their marriage, Hannah's father conveyed 45 acres of land to John and Hannah, on which they built their house that was later used as a garrison in King Phillip's war.[2]

Death and Burial

Hannah died on 21 April 1704 (or 24 or 27), in Newton, Massachusetts,[17] aged 73.[9] She was buried in East Parish Burying Ground, Newton, Massachusetts.[25] Her husband John died in Newton on 8 July 1708,[2] aged 82.[9]
