Biography

James was born in 1862 (based on his age at passing), the son of James Jackson (a mariner) and Ann McCalmont.

On March 27th, 1890 James married Esther Hill in the 2nd Presbyterian Church, in Islandmagee. James was recorded as full age, a Bachelor and a Mariner residing in Mullaghboy Islandmagee. Esther was recorded as full age and a Spinster residing in Islandmagee. The witnesses were William C. Jackson and Mary E. McCalmont. [1]

James and Esther were residing in a house 27 in Mullaghboy (Islandmagee, Antrim) during the 1901 Census of Ireland with at that time their 5 children. James was recorded as a Seaman.[2][3]

Sadly, Esther passed away in 1909. During the 1911 Census of Ireland, James was residing in a house 33.2 in Gransha (Island Magee, Antrim) with 3 of his sons (William age 20, Andrew age 11 & Robert age 7) and with his sister Jane (Jackson) McMaster and her family. James was recorded as a Ship Master.[4][5]

On September 6th, 1916 James married Mary (McClenaghan) Alexander in the 1st Presbyterian Church in Larne. James was recorded as a Widower and a Master Mariner residing in Gransha, Islandmagee. Mary was recorded as a Widow also residing in Gransha, Islandmagee. The witnesses were James J. McMaster and Margaret McClure.[6]


James passed away on May 25th, 1933 (age 71).[7] He left a will, and probate was granted to his widow Mary and William L. Skelton, solicitor.[8] He is interred in the Jackson Family Plot in St. John's Church of Ireland Graveyard, in Islandmagee.[9]

And James Jackson, died in New Zealand 11th June 1927 aged 35 years. And the above named James Jackson, Junr., died 25th May 1933 aged 71 years.
