Biography

Hugh was born in 1682, the son of Francis Jackson and Elizabeth Unknown and passed away in August of 1750, per the family bible record of Elihu Chadwick who married Anne Martha Jackson, his daughter. In 1698, a Hugh Jackson chose George Corlies as his guardian. [1] In 1712 a Thomas Borden purchased of Hugh Jackson property which the said Hugh stated was a "peis of tract of land which fell to my by heirship from my loveing father, deceased."[2] This is part of the land granted Francis Jackson by the proprietors in 1694.

In religious matters, Hugh and wife Mary, were members of the Society of Friends (Quaker). When their daughter, Anne Martha married, she broke with the society and began following the religious preferences of her husband, Elihu Chadwick, who was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.

Records of Hugh are scarce but he is mentioned in 1718 as having previously owned the property in a deed between John Britton and Jeremiah Stillwell [3] and in 1719 as buying property from his "loving brother-in-law, Nicholas Brown". This relationship is convoluted as the widows of Brown's and Potter's intermarried one another creating a relationship between Hugh, his having married Mary (or Mercy) Potter, daughter of Ephraim. He's mentioned again in 1729 in relation to Nicholas Potter, brother of his wife, Mary. [4]

In 1707, Hugh was a witness to the will of John Hance, [5] in 1724 as having been repaid a debt from the estate of Nathaniel Parker, [5]and again in 1728, he witnessed the will of Amos White. [5] He witnessed the will of Thomas White, Sr. written 30 Oct 1745 and proved 25 May 1747 [6]

No burial or will has been discovered for Hugh. His wife Mary, is last mentioned in her father's will in 1716. When she actually died has not been discovered. There appear to have only been three children born to Hugh and Mary (Mercy) Jackson:

Mary Jackson abt 1710-unknown
Anne Martha Jackson 1713-1799
Hugh Jackson, Jr. 1716-1760
