Biography

This profile is part of the Jacobs Name Study.

According to census information, Helena Jacobs was born in 1841.

On the 1861 census, Helena is listed as "Lena Jacobs" - most likely a nickname that the head of the house wrote down on the census form. [1]

On the 1891 census Helena's birthplace is listed as Nickenich, Germany. The other census information we have found for Helena simply says she was born in Germany. [2]

Helena married John Martin, also from Germany, in the second quarter of 1874 in Mile End Old Town, London, England. Her maiden name on the marriage register was spelt Jakobs as oppose to Jacobs on all the census information. [3]

Helena and John had a son named John Baptiste Apollinaris on 6 April 1976. His birth location is listed as Hoxton, London, England. Helena was aged 34. [4]

Helena's husband, John Martin, passed away in 1898 at the age of 58. Helena was aged 56/57.

In the 1901 census for England and Wales, Helena's residence is listed as Poplar, London, England. She is listed as a widow, further confirming the death of John Martin before this date. [5]

The 1911 census shows Helena as living in St Anne's House, Home For Aged Poor, 77 Manor Road, Stoke Newington, London, England at age 70. It lists her former profession as a dressmaker. [6]

Helena Martin (Jacobs) passed away in the second quarter of 1913 in Hackney, London, England. [7]

Notes

Sadly we do not have confirmed birth records for Helena so we are unable to ascertain who her parents might have been and if they emigrated to England with her or if she arrived alone. There is one family from Lennep, Rheinland, Prussia, Germany who had a daughter called Helena Jacobs in 1841 but this needs further investigation to confirm or discount the connection. We also can't find any record of Helena arriving in England from Germany.
