Biography

This profile is part of the Grafschaft Bentheim (Kreis) One Place Study.
Harm Jacobs has German Roots.

Children: Janna (Jan 21 1790), Jan (Oct 28 1791), Annigje (Sept 29 1793, married Jan Harm Huber, 7 children), Harm (Dec 26 1795, married Hinderkien Zaalmink, 3 children), Jennegien (Nov 10 1799), Derk (April 23 1801).

Herm Jacobs from de Pikkarije became a member of the Reformed church in Emlichheim on March 20 1780. On December 13 1785 Herm Jakobs from de Pikkarie moved to Schonebeek in Drenthe, close to Emmen. On December 3 1789 Harm Jacobs from de Piccarie came back to Emlichheim from Schonebeek. He is called a kuhhirt (cow herder) and dekker (builder) in some of his records.

Harm’s and Jantien’s marriage record does not seem to be listed in Emlichheim, Laar or Veldhausen, or anywhere in Drenthe. It’s possible they were married in an undisclosed town in the Hardenberg or Emlichheim areas about the time they moved, or it may be that there’s another Schonebeek someplace. Since they returned to Emlichheim in 1790, it’s possible they had at least one child elsewhere. I would suggest there was a girl named Gese born somewhere else since that name is missing altogether from the children we know about.

Harm’s mother died when he was 3; his father married Jenne Ende when he was 4 and died when he was 8. Jenne married Jan Bovenste Jacobs when he was 9. These would be the people who raised Harm and his 2 step siblings. That may explain why he left home by age 16.

The surname Jacobs is very common in the Piccardies at this time. Included with them are the Bovenste Jacobs (meaning “mostly Jacobs” or "the upper Jacobs") and Dijk Jacobs (probably the ones who lived by a dike). While Harm’s parents are named Jacobs in the Emlichheim record, they are named Dijk Jacobs and Bovenste Jacobs in many of the Veldhausen records… but not always. Since there were two Jan Jacobs born about the same time living in the Piccardies, it’s easy to confuse them. The baptism record of Harm listed only his father, as Jan Jacobs.

Harm’s baptism record was included in the Ortsfamilienbuch under Jan Jacobs and Jenne Janz ter Bahne from Neue Piccardie, so for many years I thought these were his parents. Apparently they’re not. Harm’s records in Emlichheuim list his parents as Jan Jacobs and Gese Jacobs.

Then there’s the question of the name Harm. The following names are used interchangeably in the records on several occasions: Harm, Harmen, Herm and Herman.

There was a second Harm Jacobs born in 1771. It has also long been believed that our Harm’s second wife was Henderkien van Engen. She came from Schoonebeek, and since Harm moved there it seemed logical. However, she seems to have been married to the second Harm Jacobs. They had a Jenne in 1825 and a Derk in 1818 (not their first son). His first wife was Jantjen Vos; his parents are listed as Engbert Jacobs and Jenne Jacobs. He died in 1834, 7 years after our Harm died.

In other records, Harmen (Heuvelharm) Jakobs, married to Jantjen Lubbers, is listed with parents Jan Jacobs and Gese Jacobs, both born in Alte Piccardie. Harm’s jobs are listed in different places as farmer and dekker (I believe a house builder).

It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Harm by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Harm:
