Biography

See notes under her husband.

Aaf Jacobs made profession of faith in the Wervershoof Reformed Church on Feb 1 1691. She was probably working as a maid there. Aaf transferred her membership from Wervershoof to the Buurtjeskerk on July 31 1695.

Aaff is called Aaf Dircks in her marriage record and Aaf Jacobs in all others.

It seems Aaff died in childbirth. In her will dated June 8 1720 she is listed with her husband Jan Dirksz Best as owning a farmhouse in Munnikij on the Noorderdijk (the name of most of the territory that later became Andijk). In 1709, 350 guilders were put into repairs on it. An acre of seedland called De Huibacker by the molensloot, next to the house, is mentioned next. Then 5 pieces of land on the hornsloot and in Lutjebroek and Grootebroek, then another 4 pieces of land worth over 400 guilders altogether. She also owned at least 18 cows and calves, several bed articles including 9 blankets, 15 sleeping covers and 18 pillows, a chest, 14 chairs, a copper bedpan, several different cooking pans including one for pancakes and another for butter, 2 beer glasses, 2 beer containers, a Bible, a catechism book plus another book, a cheese box plus other cheese items (probably to make cheese with), 2 tables, 2 tablecloths, and about 1800 guilders (this is not the complete list). I don't know if this was owned in conjunction with her husband or if these were her specific belongings. In any case, they seem to have been quite well off.

Which Aaf Jacobs

It took some work to figure out which was our Aaf: this Aaf Jacobs or Aecht Jacobs Buisman as found at [1]. Here are the items that helped point me in this direction.

For Aecht Jacobs Buisman:

1. A great granddaughter was named Aagt but went by Aaf.

2. In WestFries Archief, Aaf Jacobs Buisman is listed twice as Jan Dirksz Best's wife and twice Souw Jacobs Buisman is listed as his sister-in-law.

For Aaf Jacobs:

1. I believe WestFries Archief is wrong. The relationships are only listed on the cover page of each document. Aaf Jacobs is called... well, Aaf Jacobs with no Buisman attached; Jan is listed as the voogd (guardian) of Souw's children without mentioning any other relationship. Another voogd who is not related to the family was listed at the same time.

2. Aaf's mother's name was Aaf, which she then passed on to a daughter. There is no Aaf in Aecht's family.

3. Aaf was from Onderdijk in Wervershoof, not Andijk. She made profession of faith in Wervershoof 4 years before she married, and her church membership transfer is marked clearly in both Wervershoof and Andijk. It's possible she worked as a maid there, but four years seems a long time.
