Research Notes

Note: There are several early profiles added to the online genealogies for the Broersen/Decker families (and here at WIkiTree), that look very similar to profiles from a later generation, there for example are two Magdalena Jans profiles, the early one that's attached as this Gerrits wife and there's a very similar Magdalena Jans from a later generation, she is the daughter of Jan Broersen, for her sources can be found but for the one attached as wife of Gerrit there are no sources at all. (The Magdalena Schut probably was Magdalena Willems Schut she marries Gearlef Decker!) There also are two Heyltje Jacobs or Jeyltje Jacobs profiles and for them it's the same...guess maybe someone figured because of the naming tradition all the patronymic names were repeated for many generations but this of course didn't mean the wifes were repeated... so perhaps we should disconnect and merge these 'duplicate' wifes into just the ones that are proven ? See also the info below..

According to Margaret Schaub McDaniel, Jan Broersen married Heyltje Jacobs about 1650. Magdalena Janse Decker, the daughter of Jan Broersen Decker and Heyltje Jacobs, married Johannes Westbroek on 12 May 1687 in Ulster County, New York.[4]

I have disconnected Jan Broersen Decker from the profiles for his supposed father Broer Hendricksen Decker (1589-1648), supposed mother Catherina (Gerritson) Gerrits (1592-1639), and supposed second wife of that father, Jeyltje Jacobs (1608-abt.1660). This action has also disconnected four supposed siblings, some grandparents, and at least one uncle. There seems to be no good evidence to identify Jan's parents, and (as has been noted repeatedly on the various profiles) there is well-founded suspicion that several of these profiles represent confusion with a documented person (for example, the name of Jeyltje Jacobs (1608-abt.1660) looks remarkably like the name of Jan Broersen Decker's first wife Heyltje (Jacobs) Dekker (abt.1635-1678)).

If evidence is found to fill out the stories of these people's lives in Denmark or Germany, I hope the profile managers or other members will edit the profiles, and if there is evidence to restore some connections, of course it will be considered.

It may be appropriate to "merge away" some of these profiles. If profile managers want to merge with a surviving New Netherland profile, please propose the merge.

Jacobs-1749 and Jacobs-791 appear to represent the same person because: they were in an unmerged match & the New Netherland Settlers Approval System (http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:New_Netherland_Settlers_-_Approval_System) now has them marked "Green" (NNS Category) and "Orange" (Merge Pending), indicating that the two are ready to be merged. Thanks!

This Jeyltje Jacobsen-694 born 1608 has been repeatedly brought into WikiTree, as here, as daughter of Tryntje Van_Beestede-3, born 1625, which is of course impossible. No doubt this is just propagation from the same bad Ancestry tree. Both Jeyltje and Tryntje have now been set with their respective matches, for later merge, so I am going to disconnect Jeyltje from this bogus mother relationship.

This Jeyltje Jacobs-791 appears to me to have been confused in the tree with Heyltje (Jaacobs) Decker, who lived a generation later. Jeyltje, born 1608, is currently attached to parents who are some years younger than her. As Daughter of Rutger Jacobsen and Tryntje Van Beestede, those parents are a match for the parents of the much younger Heyltje.

Jeyltje and Heyltje may appear to perhaps be indeed the same daughter, however Jeyltje has children born in the 1640s, whereas Heyltje's children are born in the 1650s - 1670s, and no overlap.

jeyltje is most likely a 2nd wife of Broer, after his first wife died in 1639. But Jeyltje is also confused as mother of Jan. And as wife of Jan. But again, that wife would instead be Heyltje.

So I am going to disconnect the parents only for now, because that is clearly wrong.

The spouse and mother relationship for Jeyltje will need further study before any action or merges on her.
