Pauley Jacques was a convict after the Third Fleet transported to Western Australia
Pauley Jacques was born in the Village of Great Eversden, Cambridgeshire, England.
Poley "Pauley" was born around May 1827 in the Village of Great Eversden, Parish of Great Eversden, approximately 6 miles (10 km) south-west of the City of Cambridge, in Cambridgeshire, England. He was the son of John Jacques and Susan Worland. His baptism takes place on the 13 May 1827 at the Parish Church of St. Mary, in the Village of Great Eversden, Cambridgeshire, England[1]. In 1841, Pauley was living with parents John and Susan "Jakes" in the Village of Great Eversden, 6 miles southwest of the City of Cambridge, District of Caxton & Arrington, in Cambridgeshire with siblings Christopher, George, William and Lydia (Jacques); Mary (Story) and her children William, Sarah and Samuel (Story)[2].
However, at 15 years old, Pauley, is charged with Larceny, on the 6 January 1843 at the Cambridge Assizes. At the time, he was acquitted and there was no prosecution[3]. We find him, once again, at the age of 19, charged with "stealing one Ewe Sheep at Great Eversden, the property of William Angell" on the 23 December 1846. He is tried on the 7 January 1847 at the General Trial Sessions at Chesterton Gaol, Cambridgeshire and once again, Pauley is acquitted on the 8 January 1847. At the time, he is described as being 5 feet 4 inches with a fair complexion, light brown hair and blue eyes. Distinguishing marks were recorded as having a Tattoo of an Anchor and Star on his right arm with a bird on the left and a mole on his bakc with two scars. The General Remarks on his Record is that he is "a bad character"[4]. Finally, on the 27 April 1847, he is further charged with "breaking into the Dwelling House of William Watson of Harlton, Farrier and stealing 2 cheeses, half a loaf of bread, half a Sovereign, Waistcoat and a pair of Trousers". This time, when he is tried on the 1 July 1847 at Chesterton Gaol, Pauley is sentenced to 10 years transportation. On the 29 September 1847, he is removed to Millbank Prison, London to await Transportation[5]. On the 14 March 1851, he is transferred to the convict ship "Pyrenees" from the Old Bailey, in London and begins his voyage to the Swan River Colony, arriving there on the 28 June 1851[6].
