Biography

Phebe (Jaggers) Painter was born in Ohio.

Phebe, daughter of Charles Jager and Rhoda Chilcote,[1] was born 22 March 1847 in Franklin Township, Knox (now Morrow) County, Ohio.

Three-year-old Phebe L. remained on the family farm in Franklin Township in 1850 with her parents Charles (age 44, farmer on own land) and Rhoda Jager (38), and siblings Mary Ann (17), Malinda (16), Sarah J. (14), Matilda "Tillie" (12), Greenbary (10), Silas (8), Melissa Elizabeth (6), Caroline Frances (5) and Rhoda Jager (1).[2]

Residence (1860) farm valued at $2,000 in Franklin Township, Morrow, Ohio Charles (age 54, farmer) and Rhoda Jager (48), Malinda (26, seamstress), Malissa (16), Frances C. (15), Phebe (13), Rhoda (11), Nichodemus (9) and Aurilla E. Jaggers (6).[3]


On 23 December 1869 in Morrow County, Ohio, she married John G. Painter,[4] son of Jacob Painter and Ann Nickols. They had children:

  1. Infant Daughter Painter (b. 1 April 1870;.[5][6] d. unknown).
  2. Georgie Anna Leora "Georgia" (Painter) Dumbauld (b. 12 February 1872;[7]
    m. David Franklin Dumbauld;[8] d. 4 November 1904).[9]
  3. Charles Elmer Painter (b. 7 November 1873;[10] m. Adelaide C. White;[11] d. 6 March 1942).[12]

Phebe died 7 October 1942 in Emporia, Lyon County, Kansas,

and was buried at Waverly Cemetery in Waverly, Coffey County, Kansas.[14]
