Biography

The James pedigree in Miscellanea Genealogica et Heraldica[1] noted Sarah James as a daughter of Roger James van Heastricht and Sarah Morskyn.

In the will of her father Roger James, Brewer of All Saints Barking London [All Hallows by the Tower, City of London], the will made on 19 Jun 1589, signed and sealed on 20 Apr 1590, and proved on 13 Mar 1591/1592[2] she was unmarried and bequeathed £1000.

Marriages and Children

She married first Thomas Draper and second Sir Nicholas Kempe.[1]

In the will of her mother Sara James the will made on 06 Mar 1597/1598 and proved on 25 Oct 1598[3] Sarah was recorded as the wife of Thomas Draper. The will also mentioned their daughter Sara Draper.

Her first husband Thomas Draper died on 23 Oct 1611 leaving Sarah and three sons and one daughter[4] and her second husband Sir Nicholas Kempe died on 03 Sep 1624.[4]

Death and Monument

She died on 25 Jul 1650 age 77 and was buried with her second husband at Islington, Middlesex.

There is a monument to Sarah at Islington, Middlesex:[4]

"Here lieth Dame Sarah Kempe, who was first married to Thomas Draper, Esq.; after to Sir Nicholas Kempe, Kt. and died the 25 of Julie, 1650, in the 77 year of her age"
