Biography

Fred was born on 16 January 1888 in Pontypridd, Glamorgan, Wales. [1]

He was the son of Richard James and Sarah Watkins.

In the 1891 Census, Fred (aged 3) was living at 22 Sheppard Street, Llantrisant, Glamorganshire, Wales [2] with his parents Richard and Sarah James and his brother William aged 4 and cousin Emma Watkins, as well as his widowed Grandmother Sarah Watkins, who was employed as a Laundress.

In the 1901 Census, Fred (aged 13) was living with his parents Richard and Sarah James at 2 Upper Vaughan Street, Pwllgwaun Near Pontypridd, Glamorgan, Wales and was employed as a Colliery Door Boy Below Ground in the coal mine. [3] Also living at the same address were his brother William aged 14, working as a Mason's Labourer, and his sister Jessie aged 3.

In the 1939 Register, Fred was living with his wife Florence at 22 Vaughan Street, Pontypridd. He was employed as a Colliery Haulier Heavy Worker Below ground and also worked in an unpaid capacity for St Johns Ambulance. Florence was doing Unpaid Domestic Duties and their son Ronald was Incapacitated although he also worked in an unpaid capacity for St Johns Ambulance.

He passed away after 1939.

David Stephens ( Great nephew ) Interestingly 22 Vaughan Street on the corner opposite 2 Upper Vaughan Street was where James and Emma John lived in 1900's . Emma died 1910 and James and his son Leonard moved into 2 Upper Vaughan Street.
