In the 1871 census Charles (age 18) was the son of Ann James in Northumberland Street Northumberland Terrace, St Mary, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England.^[3] Although his father is not recorded, his sister Frances is noted to be the daughter of Samuel Reville.^[4]

Charles married Emma Maria James in September 1875.^[5] Their children were:

It seems as though the most likely is the first as Charles is not anywhere described as having a middle name of 'Arthur' From these records it appears as though his mother also had the surname "James"
