Noel was born at Rangiora on the 24 December 1891 to Elizabeth and Joseph James. He was the second of eight children born to this couple. [1]
He was 18 years old when his father died as a result of falling from a wagon. His mother had just given birth to her only daughter, and would have been grateful for the support of her older children. Noel worked as a telegraphist with the Electric Telegraph Department, and his contributions to the household income would have been most welcome.
He enlisted for World War 1 on the 30 May 1916. He had joined the Seventeenth Reinforcements and a farewell was held for him at the Oddfellows Hall on the 17 August 1916. [2]
In the same month he married Annie Wilkinson, a daughter of Catherine and Edmund Wilkinson. Noel and Annie were married at her home in Gore Bay, Cheviot[3] on the 11 September 1916. [4] Three daughters made up their family.
Noel served three years in the army. His serial number was 25884. He served in the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, and ended up with the rank of Staff Sergeant. [5] He returned to New Zealand aboard the "Remuera" in late April 1919. [6]
Noel and Annie were now able to start their life together. They lived at 64 Tancred Street, Linwood, from 1920 until the the late 1960's.
He died at his home, 32 Abberley Crescent, St Albans, [7]Christchurch on the 1 September 1977. [8]
His funeral service was held on Monday, the 5 September 1977 at St Barnabas' Anglican Church, 147 Main North Road, Woodend, followed by internment in the adjacent cemetery. His grave is in Area 4, Row B, Plot L 41. [9]
He had signed his last will and testament on the 1 July 1963. He described himself as a public servant. He made his wife sole executor and trustee and left her his real and personal estate. If Annie predeceased him, then two of his sons-in-law, Keith Hood of Somerton, Rakaia, and Clarence John Maindonald, consulting engineer of Riccarton, were named as trustees and executors. His estate was to be converted to cash and divided equally between his three daughters. [10]
